Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey has been officially charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault, according to authorities in the United Kingdom.

The 32-year-old Ghanaian international faces serious allegations involving three different women. According to the Metropolitan Police, two rape charges stem from complaints made by one woman, while three additional rape counts are tied to a second woman. The sexual assault charge relates to a third individual. These alleged offenses are reported to have occurred between 2021 and 2022.

Police confirmed that Partey is scheduled to appear before the Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, August 5. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated that the charges follow an in-depth investigation launched in February 2022, after a formal report of rape was initially received.

Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy emphasized the police’s ongoing commitment to the wellbeing of the alleged victims, saying, “Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward.”

Thomas Partey’s legal team has strongly denied the allegations. In a statement, his defense lawyer said, “Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. He has fully cooperated with the police and the Crown Prosecution Service throughout their three-year investigation.” The lawyer added that Partey is eager to finally clear his name but, due to ongoing legal proceedings, will refrain from making further public comments at this time.

The developments come just as Partey’s tenure with Arsenal Football Club comes to an end. Having joined the Premier League side from Atlético Madrid five years ago, Partey’s contract recently expired, prompting interest from major European clubs including Juventus, Barcelona, and Fenerbahce.

Despite struggling with recurring injuries during his time in North London, Thomas Partey managed to make 130 Premier League appearances, scoring four goals—including 35 appearances in the most recent season. His performances on the pitch have also made him a regular for the Ghana national team, where he remains a key player.

Partey’s off-field issues now cast a significant shadow over his career trajectory. The football world is closely watching how this case unfolds, with many stakeholders—including clubs, fans, and sponsors—waiting to see the legal outcome before taking further steps. The allegations have sparked widespread reactions both in the UK and Ghana, with legal experts urging the public to allow due process to take its course.

The Metropolitan Police are continuing to encourage anyone with relevant information or who has been affected by the case to come forward and contact the appropriate authorities.
