NPP sets January 2026 deadline to elect 2028 presidential candidate

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate for the 2024 elections, has revealed that the party plans to select its 2028 flagbearer no later than January next year.

Reflecting on the timeline of the 2024 campaign, Dr. Bawumia admitted that the late selection of the NPP’s 2024 candidate placed the party at a disadvantage. While the opposition’s John Mahama had already launched a nationwide campaign as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, the NPP was still managing internal contest fallout.

Speaking to party members, Dr. Bawumia explained that the internal flagbearer election, held in November, left little room for post-election reconciliation across constituencies. The prolonged internal process, he noted, caused significant division and delayed campaign momentum.

“We elected our presidential candidate a bit late. By November, Mahama had already toured the country. We had spent three years on internal elections that fractured the party. There was no time for healing. I had to quickly enter the field to begin campaigning while many constituencies remained unsettled,” he stated.

He further disclosed that the NPP is currently drafting a proposal to complete all internal elections—from polling station to presidential candidate—by January next year. This forward-looking approach, he said, would give the party ample time to reconcile and prepare for the 2028 general elections.

“Our aim is to finalize all internal processes early enough so we can unify and mobilize effectively with a full three-year lead time before the next election,” he concluded.
