The government’s failure to settle the outstanding arrears owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs) has led to the producers convening an urgent meeting.
The debt owed to IPPs has escalated from US$2 billion to nearly US$2.3 billion.
Scheduled for Thursday, July 27, 2023, the meeting aims to find a solution to the persistent problem of non-payment.
After what seemed to be productive negotiations with the Electricity Company of Ghana, the IPPs chose not to shut down their power facilities supplying the national grid.
Despite assurances and the continuation of electricity production beyond the June 30 deadline, it appears that the commitments made during the discussions have been violated, much to the disappointment of the IPPs.
During the upcoming emergency meeting, the primary focus will be on devising a strategy to address the government’s debt and prevent potential power disruptions.
However, the IPPs have refrained from disclosing their individual situations, pledging to share more information after the meeting on Thursday.
As the situation unfolds and discussions progress, further details are expected to be released, shedding light on the challenges faced by IPPs and the potential implications for Ghana’s electricity supply.
