Ten final-year students at Koforidua Technical Institute (KOTECH) have been dismissed for allegedly reporting late to the school’s morning assembly, raising serious concerns over the impact on their academic futures.

The disciplinary action, which bars the students from taking part in the ongoing mock examinations, has triggered widespread criticism from parents, education advocates, and student welfare groups. The mock exams are a key preparatory step ahead of the final West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

School authorities reportedly took the decision as part of efforts to enforce punctuality and discipline. However, stakeholders argue the punishment is disproportionately severe, given the timing and long-term academic implications.

KOTECH’s Vice Principal, Mr. Orlando, confirmed the dismissal but did not comment on whether the administration would reconsider or offer an alternative path forward for the affected students.

In a heartfelt appeal to the Ghana Education Service (GES), the students are asking for clemency and an opportunity to sit for their mock exams.

“We’re not denying our mistake, but we believe the punishment is too harsh—especially when our final exams are just around the corner,” one of the affected students said.

Calls are mounting for the GES to intervene swiftly, with education stakeholders urging a balanced approach that upholds school discipline while safeguarding the educational trajectory of final-year learners.

As of now, the GES has not issued an official statement on the matter.
