Ghana’s transport fares to drop by 15% starting May 24

Ghanaian commuters can expect some financial relief as transport fares are set to decrease by 15% starting Saturday, May 24, 2025. This decision follows collaborative negotiations between major transport unions and the Ministry of Transport.

The fare adjustment reflects recent macroeconomic improvements, particularly the sustained appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi against the U.S. dollar and a corresponding decline in fuel prices. These trends have created room for cost reductions in public transport services.

This move comes on the heels of calls from the Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association, which urged its members to slash prices of auto parts in line with the improved exchange rate. While spare part prices have yet to be widely adjusted, transport operators are proceeding with the fare cuts as a proactive step.

Abass Imoro, Industrial Relations Officer of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), confirmed the development in an interview with Citi News. “We have finally agreed to reduce lorry fares by 15%, but it will take effect from Saturday,” he stated.

Imoro noted that, although reductions in lubricant prices and widespread auto parts adjustments are still pending, the GPRTU chose to implement the fare cut in good faith, recognizing the immediate benefit to passengers.

This 15% fare reduction marks a significant step in aligning transportation costs with current economic realities, providing much-needed relief to commuters nationwide.
