President Nana Akufo-Addo’s lawyer, Akoto Ampaw confirmed dead

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of distinguished legal luminary, Lawyer Akoto Ampaw Esq.

This revered Ghanaian lawyer and fervent human rights advocate departed this world on October 20, 2023, at the University of Ghana Medical Center (UGMC), where he had been receiving medical care. Reports suggest that his health had been a concern since the onset of the year.

Lawyer Akoto Ampaw made an indelible mark as the head of the legal team that staunchly defended President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s triumph in the 2020 Presidential elections at the hallowed halls of the Supreme Court. It was widely anticipated that he would assume the role of Special Prosecutor, a position for which the president had granted assent through the Office of Special Prosecutor Bill.

Fondly known as ‘Che Che’ since his days as a student at the University of Ghana, Mr. Ampaw played an integral role as part of the New Patriotic Party’s legal team during the Electoral Petition of 2013. He was also a valued partner at Akufo-Addo’s esteemed law firm, Akufo-Addo, Prempeh & Co.

Lawyer Ampaw leaves behind an impeccable legacy in the legal fraternity, particularly for his unrelenting advocacy of human rights campaigns and his unwavering dedication to ensuring fair and just legal proceedings.

He was a distinguished alumnus of the University of Ghana, having obtained his LL.B. in 1973, and later furthered his legal education at the Ghana School of Law, earning his B.L. in 1993. His profound contributions to the legal landscape will be remembered for generations to come.
