Child Rights International Ghana has urged Adisadel College’s administration to reconsider its decision to suspend students involved in an assault incident at the school.
In a statement signed by Bright Appiah, the organization expressed concern about the dismissal of the students, stating that the Ghana Education Service (GES) seemed to have made the decision without conducting a proper investigation and obtaining a social enquiry report.
The distressing incident involved one student restraining the victim’s arms and forcefully slamming his face onto a metal bed, resulting in severe bleeding beneath the victim’s right eye.
Child Rights International emphasized that the GES should only uphold the decision to suspend the students if their presence at the school poses a significant threat to others.
Therefore, the organization called on the GES to retract their decision and reinstate the students unless it can be demonstrated that their presence indeed poses an extreme risk to other students. Any action taken should adhere to the provisions outlined in Section 2 (1), (2), 8 (1), and 18 (1), (m) & (n) of the Children’s Act, 1998 (Act 560), ensuring that the best interests of the child are always prioritized.
Additionally, CRI has requested a comprehensive inquiry into the legality of the incident and the appropriate actions to be taken.
