The Kwesimintsim constituency has launched its first radio station, The OilCity Radio 95.9.

The event which occurred on March 30, 2022, at the OilCity radio station premises, Kwesimintsim, attracted traditional authorities, government officials, and media.

The launch was intended to provide the Kwesimintsim constituents with a two-way communication process and add to the economic ecosystem of the constituency by creating the appropriate avenue for young media talents to find employment and internship opportunities.

The Member of Parliament for the Kwesimintsim constituency, Honourable Dr Prince Hamid Armah noted that the ambition of most media channels is to reach most people in the shortest possible time to be the first to break news to their audience.

However, he posited that “today we barely get any context for breaking news; we barely see programming that is community-driven and intended to give a voice to the people to drive positive change”

He, therefore, appealed to the management of OilCity radio to make a difference, and carve for itself a niche in providing meaningful content that will educate, inspire and empower its listeners.

“I count on management to ensure that your tagline, The Voice of the People is practised as a daily principle rather than a beautiful maxim to attract listeners,” he added.

As an education policy analyst, he urged management to develop educative content to deepen the understanding of knowledge of younger people.

“I entreat management of the station to adhere strictly to all content regulations and classifications to ensure that minors are not exposed to content detrimental to their development.”

The OilCity Radio is situated in Kwesimintsim – Takoradi, transmitting on 95.9MHz. The station’s broadcast is a blend of exciting and neutral programming that informs, educates, entertains, and promotes the development of the communities within its coverage area.

OilCity Radio broadcasts 70% of its programmes in Akan and 30% in English to reach audiences from all ethnicities in the Western and Central Regions. Programmes are also live-streamed on the channel’s Facebook page OilCity Radio 95.9.
