Over 500 displaced as floods ravage Kasoa; authorities to demolish buildings on waterways

About 500 residents in Kasoa in the Awutu Senya East Municipality have been displaced following torrential rains on Sunday, May 18, 2025. The floods submerged communities including Dokutsekope, Iron City, Akweley, Walantu, and Kpometey, causing widespread destruction.

Victims reported extensive damage to property, including electronics, clothing, and household items. “We’ve lost nearly everything – our radio, fridge, clothes, and even books,” said Jane Lartey, a mother of three, speaking to Channel One News.

Dorcas Amu, a local trader, estimated losses of around GHC 4,000. “My entire stock of salt was washed away or dissolved,” she lamented.

Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunnor, confirmed that reports from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) indicate that approximately 500 individuals have been displaced. “Temporary shelters are being arranged as we mobilize further support,” she stated.

Municipal authorities have attributed the flooding to unauthorized structures obstructing natural waterways. Municipal Chief Executive, Seth Sabah Serwonoo-Banini, warned of impending demolitions. “All buildings erected on waterways and within 200 meters of riverbanks will be removed,” he told Channel One News.

The situation underscores growing concerns about urban planning violations and their role in exacerbating natural disasters in flood-prone regions of Ghana.
