Joe Biden diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer; says “cancer touches us all” in emotional message

Former U.S. President Joe Biden has publicly shared his diagnosis of an aggressive form of prostate cancer, sparking an outpouring of support from across the globe. The announcement was made on Sunday, May 18, through a statement from Biden’s personal office.

The 82-year-old statesman was recently examined by physicians after experiencing increasing urinary symptoms. “Last week, President Joe Biden was seen for a new finding of a prostate nodule,” the official statement noted. “On Friday, he was diagnosed with prostate cancer, characterised by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone.”

Despite the seriousness of the condition, Biden’s team confirmed that the cancer is hormone-sensitive, opening a pathway for effective treatment. He and his family are currently reviewing available medical options with his doctors.

On Monday, Biden took to social media platform X to share an emotional message, accompanied by a photo of himself with his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, and their cat Willow. “Cancer touches us all,” he wrote. “Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support.”

According to the American Cancer Society, a Grade Group 5 prostate cancer is highly aggressive but may still be localized, without having spread to lymph nodes or distant organs. The President’s care team is hopeful due to the hormone-sensitive nature of the disease.

The revelation adds to the long list of public figures battling cancer and serves as a powerful reminder of the widespread impact of the disease.
