Bawumia commissions a $50 million Bulk Power Supply Point in Kasoa

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President, commissioned a $50 million Bulk Power Supply Point in Kasoa, Central Region, on Wednesday (1 June).

The Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) is funding the 435 MVA project as part of the Ghana Power Compact Agreement with the US Government.

The substation will assist eliminate power outages, regulate voltages, and increase the quality and dependability of power delivered to the Awutu Senya East Municipality in Ghana’s Central Region.

Dr. Bawumia stated at the inauguration that the project, which began two and a half years ago, will greatly enhance power supplies in the rapidly increasing and industrializing Kasoa town and beyond.

“This strategic investment will also help to reduce technical losses, enhance power quality, and resolve concerns connected to the volume of unserved energy, consequently enhancing ECG and GRIDCo’s operating efficiency and finances,” Dr Bawumia noted.

The Vice President stated that the Kasoa Bulk Supply Point, the second of two initiatives under the US Government’s Millennium Challenge Account deal with Ghana, has contributed to our nation’s wealth, along with the other program.

“From the Agricultural Transformation Compact in 2007-2012 to the Power Compact, from 2017 to date, Ghana’s Compact Programs have benefited from approximately US$863 million grant funds that have supported investments in critical projects and aided players in our local supply chains,” Dr Bawumia said.

“These interventions, funded by the Government and People of the United States of America, have resolved some binding constraints in two vital sectors of our economy, and have left excellent benchmarks in Development Program Management, that is worthy of emulation; in particular the use of donor funds to complete projects on time and within budget.”

The Vice President expressed Ghana’s heartfelt gratitude to the Government of the United States of America for its assistance and collaboration.

Concerning the country’s electricity supply, Dr Bawumia stated that the NPP administration has invested heavily to rectify the inconsistent power supply that the government inherited.

“As we dedicate an important piece of electricity infrastructure like this Substation today, it is worth mentioning that enormous resources have also been invested in Ghana’s Energy Sector since our Government took office in 2017.”

This is demonstrated by the fact that the phenomena of irregular power supply have subsided, and the availability of high-quality electricity has increased, allowing enterprises to progressively raise output and productivity.”

Ghana is one of just a few nations to have successfully completed two MCA programs, and Dr Bawumia, who was engaged in both accords, has asked the US for a third Compact Agreement.

“As the Compact comes to an end, let me emphasize that the link between Ghana and the United States of America will continue to develop, allowing us to realize our shared ideals of sustainable economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction.”
